Miramar to celebrate Panamanian community with 2-night independence celebration
A two-day celebration is coming to Miramar highlighting the Panamanian community, hosted by the SOFLO Panamanian Association and Miramar Vice Mayor Yvette Colbourne, who is of Panamanian heritage.
Celebrating Panama’s Independence with Caribbean Soul and Latin Pride starts Friday, Nov. 7 and ends Nov. 8.
“Join us for two enchanting nights filled with culture, elegance and the spirit of giving, as we work together to create a positive impact for those in Panama and promote Panamanian culture in the U.S.,” the Eventbrite page reads.
Panamanians celebrate multiple holidays in the month of November.
On Nov. 28, Panamanians celebrate their independence from Spain in 1821. After gaining their independence from Spain, Panama separated from Gran Colombia and became a sovereign nation in 1903 — this decision is celebrated on Nov. 3. Nov. 4 is Flag Day and Nov. 10 celebrates the first uprising against Spain.
The festivities will start Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. with a sip and paint. Attendees can have a drink and paint Panama and tropical scenes guided by art students , the page says.
The main event on Saturday from 6 to 11 p.m. is a semi-formal gala with live performances, awards and fundraising.
Proceeds will go to the SOFLO Panamanian Association’s initiatives for veterans, elementary schools, senior adults and individuals with disabilities, as well as a scholarship fund.
Gala goers can enjoy performances throughout the night from international artists Idania Dowman, Raul Gallimore and his Orchestra Inmensidad, Ballet Folklorico Aires Panameños, Steve Higgins, Steel Away and DJ Panama 305.
All-access tickets are $135 total for both events. The flyer lists the location as the Miramar Cultural Center.
