January is almost over but the events in Miramar are just getting started.

As Black History Month approaches and with Reggae Month on the way, get ready for gatherings and shows that celebrate culture.

Here are some of the events happening in Miramar on Saturday, Jan. 31, and Sunday, Feb. 1:

Saturday

Jamaica Brew Literary & Film Festival — 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Enjoy the famous Blue Mountain coffee, signature to Jamaica, while 12 authors read their works at the Southwest Regional Library. At Consul General Oliver Mair’s event, they will screen six short films. Bring the kids for the “Ring Ding” village or snap for poetry performances. The Jamaican Consulate will also honor the late Jimmy Cliff.

Valley of the Giants Celebration — 6 p.m.

If you’re involved in local Black organizations, you may know that Valley of the Giants is celebrating its legacy. This event has been moved to the Miramar Cultural Center banquet hall at 6 p.m. Valley of the Giants will honor the contributions of historically Black organizations, Black Greek letter organizations, philanthropists and faith leaders. Delegations representing 30 to 50 organizations across Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties, as well as youth, are expected to attend.

Multiple days

Miramar Gun and Knife Show

The Miramar Gun and Knife Show is back at the Miramar National Guard Armory on Saturday (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Entry is $11 with free parking. There will be concealed carry classes at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., plus fingerprinting services will be available.
