This week in Miramar: Art exhibit, line dancing and a commission meeting
It’s a packed week in Miramar as February gets underway. Black History Month events continue with a special art exhibit opening and a themed Zumba class. Two City Hall meetings are happening, too.
Here are some of the events to check out in Miramar this week from Feb. 9-12:
Monday
The Higher Investors: Art Engagement Dialogue — 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The Higher Investors Exhibit at the Ansin Family Art Gallery in the Miramar Cultural Center highlights the work of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Join this free talkback in the banquet hall with the curator, specialist and partnering organization. The featured guest will be Oluwamodupe Oloyede, head drum major of Florida A&M University’s Marching 100.
Tuesday
Zumba on the Plaza — 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Bring water and a smile! Those are the only instructions Gaby Zumba Fit gives for these free Tuesday classes. This group dances to exercise and meets at City Hall Plaza. This will be available every week, but arrive early to secure your spot.
Rom-Com Trivia — 7 p.m.
Miramar’s World of Beer has a series of trivia events, and there’s bound to be a category that appeals to everyone. This week’s category is romantic comedies. See if you can win by knowing these films.
Planning and Zoning Board Meeting — 6:30 p.m.
The city commission receives reports from the Planning and Zoning Board, so when people show up to this meeting, commissioners hear about it. Be there to influence the way future planning projects happen in Miramar at the commission chambers in City Hall.
Wednesday
Children’s Virtual Book Reading — 10 a.m.
This free virtual reading is hosted by Mayor Wayne M. Messam and “friends.” They’ll be reading “Sulwe” by author and actress Lupita Nyong’o. Celebrate Black History Month with a Black author and a Black main character.
Miramar Chess Club — 7 to 10 p.m.
Join the group Wednesday at the Starbucks on Red Road for fun chess matches. This group welcomes players of all levels, with participants encouraged to bring their own chess set.
Commission Meeting — 7 p.m.
The commission meeting is where the city’s elected officials discuss the most pressing issues in Miramar, allowing for public comment. At this session they will also make several proclamations, including one for Black History Month. Watch in person at the City Hall commission chambers or online .
Thursday
Line Dancing Class — 6 to 8 p.m.
Get ready to dance with Jammin Jamei, who will instruct the group in several line dances to popular songs. While this isn’t an exercise class, you should bring water and be prepared to sweat.
