This weekend in Miramar: Wellness expo, kite festival, pickleball tourney & more
Miramar is launching big events this weekend to celebrate the start of spring.
Highlights include a pickleball tournament and the Jamaica Diaspora Conference launch that takes place at City Hall.
Take a look at these events happening in Miramar from Friday, March 20, through Sunday, March 22:
Friday
Low impact aerobics — 9 a.m.
Friday’s low impact aerobics class at the Vernon E. Hargray Youth Enrichment Center is all about movement without stress to your joints. Join the instructor for exercise that prioritizes moving instead of jumping or running.
Saturday
Black Family Wellness Expo — 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Links, Incorporated chapters in Broward are coming together to provide free health screeings for Black families. There will also be a blood drive and a free food giveaway. Cancer, eye health and brain health screenings will be offered. Tickets are free for this public event at Shirley Branca Park.
Yoga at MCC Botanical Garden — 10 a.m.
Free yoga Saturdays are hosted by Mayor Wayne M. Messsam. This is a weekly, outdoor class where attendees bring their own mats. Bring water, too, depending on the weather in the Miramar Cultural Center’s botanical garden.
Saturday Flow @ The Rooftop With V — 10:30 a.m.
Threetwo Ave is offering a free outdoor rooftop yoga class. Accessible to all levels, the class will be led by V. Make sure to bring a mat, and a towel to go underneath it. Find the class at the Epic Residences parking garage, where attendees can park and participate.
The World’s Greatest Kite Festival — 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The sixth annual free kite festival will take place at Miramar Regional Park. Kids can enjoy the day by building their own kite, watching kite demonstrations and enjoying live music and food trucks. Plus, the city is offering a kite giveaway. Register for free on Eventbrite.
Storytime Funday — 1 to 4 p.m.
Commissioner Avril Cherasard is joining the Miramar Branch Library for a special reading event. Stories will be read aloud, children can play interactive games and win prizes, and the event will be focused on building early literacy skills. This event is presented for free by Williams Education Academy and Kiwanis East Pines Miramar.
Sunday
Miramar Open Pickleball Tournament — 8 a.m.
Join the crowd or get on the court at Lakeshore Park Tennis Center for the Miramar Open Pickleball Tournament. Tickets start at $30 for players, but watching is free. Spots were still available as of late Thursday, March 19. The city is encouraging all levels of players to compete.
Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference Hybrid Launch — 5 to 8 p.m.
See what’s in store for the Jamaica Diaspora Conference in June at the hybrid launch online or in person. At Miramar City Hall, Jamaica Consul General Oliver Mair will give an update on what’s to come and what opportunities will be available. The gathering is meant for Jamaicans and those of Jamaican descent who are entrepreneurs, business professionals, investors, philanthropists and community leaders.
