Mayor Wayne M. Messam’s State of the City address usually reviews the past and plans for the future, and this year he’ll give his 10th address, looking back at a decade of leading Miramar.

His tenure includes a victory against Miami’s incinerator plans, a presidential bid and an All-America City award for Miramar’s civic engagement.

The State of the City address will take place at the Miramar Park of Commerce on Thursday Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m. This year’s theme is “Our Future Together.”

Messam became Miramar’s first Black mayor in 2015 and has been reelected twice since, most recently in 2023 for a four-year term.

“I’ve been blessed to be the mayor of our amazing city for a decade now. Wow, how time flies. So many of our dreams back then have become accomplished,” the mayor said in a video posted on Facebook.

Last year’s address had the theme “Local Roots, Global Reach.” At the time, Messam opened by saying that, at his first State of the City, Miramar didn’t have a personality.

“We just knew that Miramar was changing, that we were growing and developing,” he said in 2024.

He closed the speech saying, “Miramar is becoming the envy of South Florida.”

His closing remarks centered on his fight against a trash incinerator proposed on land near Miramar residents, which he fought hard to stop from happening. At the time, he implored residents to join him in advocating for Miramar in front of the Miami-Dade County Commission against the incinerator.

“We have worked too damn hard to ensure that our city meets our needs,” he said.

This year, Messam can celebrate victory over the incinerator plans.

After several protests, public appearances and town meetings, the Opa Locka West Airport site near Miramar was taken off the table in July.

The rest of this year’s address will likely include updates on the economy, housing and new developments and businesses moving to Miramar, as he spoke on these topics last year.

“We will celebrate a decade of growth and transformation, and look ahead to our future together,” Messam said in the preview video on social media.

For those who can’t make it to the event, the city usually posts the speech online after.
