Driver accused of fatal 2020 crash in Miramar while going 88 mph charged, cops say
A man was driving nearly 90 mph in a rented Ford Mustang when the muscle car collided with an SUV turning on Miramar Parkway, leaving the second driver dead, according to police.
Now, more than five years after the crash, 32-year-old Peterson Ervilus has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, Broward County records show.
According to jail records, Ervilus was booked Sept. 24 on $30,000 bond. The Miramar News reached out to his defense attorney for comment Sept. 26 but did not immediately receive a response.
Officers with the Miramar Police Department responded to an early-morning collision Aug. 21, 2020, at the intersection of Miramar Parkway and SW 148th Avenue, according to an arrest report.
Police said a Toyota Rav-4 was heading west on Miramar Parkway and was turning left when Ervilus sped through the intersection going east, and the two cars crashed.
Miramar Fire Rescue pronounced the victim dead at the scene, law enforcement said. The victim’s name is redacted from the arrest report.
Ervilus stayed at the scene and was sitting next to the rented Mustang with cuts on his face when officers arrived, police said. He was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he told a road patrol officer that he didn’t remember driving or what happened, according to the report.
Hospital staff told officers Ervilus’ blood alcohol content was .10, but a blood draw revealed it was .071, falling under the legal limit of .08, police said. But the blood test revealed Ervilus had “active THC” in his system as well, officers wrote in the report.
The Electronic Data Recorder on Ervilus’ Hertz rental later showed he was driving 87.9 mph in a 45-mph zone when the crash happened, according to the arrest report.
A DNA test also showed Ervilus, of Apopka, was the one driving the Mustang, police said.
A capias for his arrest was issued nearly a month before he was taken into custody. He pleaded not guilty, records show.
