Miramar teacher under investigation for comments after Charlie Kirk’s death
A 66-year-old social sciences teacher at Everglades High School in Miramar was placed on administrative reassignment after an alleged racially charged incident on Sept. 11, according to reports.
Steven Babice’s reaction to conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s death was recorded by a student, and their parent filed a complaint with the school, according to the Miami New Times.
The publication, which spoke with the anonymous child and parent, reported that the video depicts part of a rant where Babice asks, “Why do Black people hate white people?” And, “How come there are parades, fires, murders, and burning cities down all because George Floyd, a career criminal, died? But when a white girl on a train gets stabbed in the neck — just whispers. If that was a white guy killing a Black girl, the world would be upside down, correct? So who’s the racist?”
As of Sept. 29, Broward County Public Schools was investigating while Babice remained away from the classroom. BCPS told the Miramar News that there is no predetermined timeline for the completion of the investigation.
In a statement to the media, BCPS said, “Broward County Public Schools is committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct. We take all allegations seriously and will thoroughly investigate to ensure our learning environments remain safe, respectful, and inclusive for every student and family,” according to NBC6.
This is not the first time BCPS has questioned Babice’s behavior, according to reports. The New Times Broward-Palm Beach reported a 2019 incident in which Babice left a Facebook comment with an opinion on abortion rights.
The New Times obtained his personnel file, which shows he was given a written reprimand as a result, though many called for his termination.
