A Category 5 hurricane is headed straight for the Caribbean. How you can help
Hurricane Melissa reached Category 5 intensity and was headed straight for Jamaica as of Monday, Oct. 27.
This Caribbean island and others are already being affected, and Miramar has started to collect critical resources to ship “immediately after the storm’s passage,” according to a press release from the city.
The last hurricane that passed Jamaica, Hurricane Beryl in 2024, killed four people and caused nearly $1 billion in damage.
This year, Melissa will likely make landfall on the island.
“Miramar is home to a vibrant Caribbean community, and in times like these, we stand together as one. We are committed to providing relief and hope as they prepare for this disaster,” Mayor Wayne M. Messam said in the release.
City officials are calling on residents and businesses to join in the relief effort and donate essential supplies such as water, flashlights, sleeping bags, batteries, trash bags, work gloves, boots, non-perishable food items, personal care items and first-aid kits. Clothing and linens will not be accepted.
