Miramar elementary school ranked No. 2 in Florida by US News & World Report
Somerset Academy Miramar South was awarded the No. 2 spot in the state for best public elementary schools, according to a new report released by U.S. News & World Report.
The charter school located at 12425 SW 53rd St. tied for second with a school in Sarasota County, according to the rankings released Oct. 28. It also claimed the top spot in Broward.
It’s worth noting that Somerset Academy Miramar South is part of Somerset Academy Miramar Elementary but was ranked separately. It’s just located in a separate building with a handful of classes across the street from the main campus.
Somerset Academy Miramar Elementary came in at spot 112 in the state and No. 13 in Broward.
U.S. News calculated the ranking based on schools’ performance on standardized tests, as well as how they performed relative to expectations.
“U.S. News predicted each school’s mathematics and reading proficiencies using statewide, subject-specific linear regressions,” according to the methodology. “To make predictions, these statistical models examined the extent to which schools whose students had similar socioeconomic profiles achieved proficiency in mathematics and reading.”
According to the ranking, 98% of students at Somerset Academy Miramar South scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 98% scored at or above proficiency in reading.
Somerset Academy Middle, also on the same campus in Miramar, was ranked 65th among middle schools in Florida and No. 3 among BCPS middle schools.
The campus is the site of the first Somerset Academy, a charter school network that has since expanded to other locations in Broward, Florida and the U.S.
For reference, Broward County Public Schools has 132 elementary schools and 35 middle schools.
