A killer took 4 lives in Miramar. Nearly 30 years later, family still seeks justice
After almost 30 years without a resolution, the family of four murder victims is raising awareness for this gruesome unsolved case.
Friends, family and attorneys with the Altidor family attended a commission meeting last week to bring attention to the victims.
On April 30, 1997, Theresa Laverne, 69, and her daughter Marie Altidor, 29, were shot execution style and beaten with a hammer inside their home, and Altidor’s two children, just 2 years old and 6 weeks old, were beaten to death as well, according to family attorney Kertch J. Conze.
“That remains one of the most gruesome murders that ever took place in this particular city,” Conze said during the meeting.
In an interview with the Miramar News on Monday, Nov. 10, Conze said: “We have family members who told me they wake up at night with nightmares, just crying. It’s been unbearable.”
Mayor Wayne M. Messam allowed the lawyer to speak and represent the group of family members, despite not receiving communication that they planned to attend .
“We will all be having conversations with the police chief, our city manager and administration regarding the status of this case,” the mayor said.
Conze told the Miramar News that he sent a letter to the chief of police but didn’t get a response, resulting in the group’s appearance at the meeting.
The family is renewing calls for justice since there are no new developments.
Conze believes that a fresh look at the case and use of new technology could help, he told the Miramar News.
Marie Altidor’s husband George Altidor is on video arriving at the crime scene on the day of the killings, but he was never confirmed to be a suspect, according to NBC6.
Miramar Police Chief Delrish Moss said this crime was “not a random act.”
“There’s always a fresh set of eyes on this case,” Moss said during the meeting. “As a former homicide detective myself … we will never rest on a homicide case until it’s solved.”
