Miramar abruptly closes 2 playgrounds over safety concerns. Here’s what to know
Two popular playgrounds at Miramar Regional Park have been closed by the city until further notice following media reports showing children playing on aging and corroding equipment.
Several families complained that the playgrounds’ metal structures had become unsafe — with “rusted-through metal, exposed edges, peeling vinyl coating and sharp edges” that posed a possible hazard to children, according to a report by WPLG, Channel 10, which aired over Thanksgiving weekend.
Following the report, Parks & Recreation officials issued a statement saying the playgrounds were safe and noted that staff conducts daily safety inspections of the equipment, which was installed in 2004 and is among the oldest in the city’s park system. A full replacement of the aging structures had been planned for late 2026 under a Capital Improvement Project.
But on Monday, Dec. 1, park officials closed the playgrounds.
A post on the city’s official Facebook page announced that “Miramar Regional Park Playgrounds will be closed until further notice,” but gave no explanation.
The Miramar News reached out to the city for comment on Tuesday but didn’t get an immediate response.
The city has not indicated when the playgrounds will reopen or whether the planned repairs will begin sooner than expected.
