Three escaped Georgia convicts captured at a Miramar home, officials say
Three convicts who escaped from a Georgia jail — and allegedly held a Lyft driver hostage all the way to South Florida — were captured early Tuesday, Dec. 23, at a Miramar home, officials say.
The arrest of the three men, described as “extremely dangerous,” came following a multi-agency manhunt that stretched across state lines, federal authorities said.
Why did the manhunt end in Miramar? One of the escapees apparently had a girfriend in the area, authorities said.
Miramar Police Chief Delrish Moss confirmed to the Miramar News that the three men were taken into custody in his city.
“Miramar Police were at the scene when they were taken into custody by the federal fugitive task force,” Moss said.
The escapees, Naod Yohannes, 25, Stevenson Charles, 24, and Yusuf Minor, 31, were apprehended at an Airbnb on the 3400 block of Hibiscus Drive, a residential neighborhood.
The home had been rented by the escaped convicts with the Lyft driver’s credit card, authorities said.
Moss said his department was alerted by the FBI that the men had been traced to Miramar early Tuesday through pings on the license tag of the abducted Lyft driver’s car.
Charles, who had the local connection, had been jailed on murder and armed robbery charges. He was indicted in December 2024 by a DeKalb County grand jury on malice and felony murder charges connected to the 2022 shooting death of a Lithonia, Georgia, man.
Minor was being held on two counts of armed robbery and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, while Yohannes was charged with simple assault, arson and unlawful acts of violence in a penal institution.
After their escape, Georgia authorities said Minor’s girlfriend initially helped them by calling them a Lyft.
According to their indictment, the men attacked the driver by using a rope around her neck to take control of the car. The unidentified driver was thrown in the back seat and the trio then headed to Miramar.
After initially being held at the Broward County Jail, authorities said the suspects are now in federal custody and face additional charges tied to the alleged kidnapping of the Lyft driver. It was unclear whether the driver was still with the men when they were captured.
Officials said the fugitives escaped early Monday from the DeKalb County Jail in Decatur, a northeastern suburb of Atlanta. Authorities were vague but said the men managed to breach the 30-year-old jail.
The inmates were discovered missing during a routine security check, officials said, and a national alert was issued for the escaped convicts.
The arrests were carried out with assistance from multiple agencies, including the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the South Florida Violent Crime and Fugitive Task Force and the FBI, authorities said.
