Christmas tree recycling is free for Broward County residents. What to know
Give your Christmas tree a new life and keep it out of the landfill (and your yard) with these free programs in Broward County.
How do I recycle my Christmas tree?
Broward will operate 10 tree-chipping sites from Friday, Dec. 26 to Monday, Jan. 19. Donated trees will be used for landscaping across the region’s parks and playgrounds, reducing the county’s carbon footprint and saving taxpayer dollars.
Artificial or decorated trees will not be accepted. Only two trees are permitted per customer.
Here’s the list of tree-chipping sites throughout Broward:
- Brian Piccolo Sports Park & Velodrome, 9501 Sheridan St., Cooper City
- C.B. Smith Park, 900 N. Flamingo Road, Pembroke Pines
- Easterlin Park, 1000 NW 38th St., Oakland Park

How else can I dispose of my Christmas tree?
Trees are also eligible to be picked up as part of regular bulk trash pickup days during the first two weeks of January.
Like with the county’s recycling program, only undecorated trees will be accepted — that means no tinsel, lights, ornaments or other items. Trees over 6 feet tall must be cut in half. All parts should be placed with the rest of your garbage.
Can I burn my Christmas tree?
Burning a Christmas tree is not recommended and can be dangerous, particularly indoors.
“Dry, evergreen branches literally explode when burned and could cause a house fire,” Iowa State University’s page on the topic reads. “Also, burning the tree may contribute to the buildup of creosote and lead to a flue fire.”
