A Miramar man told police he was assaulted and his French bulldog was stolen early Monday, Jan. 5, in a violent incident that has left investigators searching for suspects, according to Miramar police.

Officers were called to an apartment complex in the 3100 block of SW 128th Terrace, near Miramar Parkway, after a ShotSpotter alert indicated possible gunfire in the area, according to Miami Herald news partner CBS News.

When units arrived, the victim told officers he was allegedly pistol-whipped by several men who then grabbed his French bulldog and took off.

At the scene, police found shell casings on the ground consistant with shots being fired, the station reported.

The unidentified victim suffered injuries and was treated at the scene by Miramar Fire Rescue.

Hours later, police located the stolen French bulldog blocks away and reunited the pet with its owner.

Miramar Police have not released descriptions of the suspects or a possible motive, and detectives continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the attack.

French Bulldogs are a highly sought after breed of dog. A puppy typically costs between $1,500 and $8,000 from a breeder, with rare colors and champion bloodlines reaching $10,000 to $15,000.

Officials are urging anyone with information about the theft to contact the Miramar Police Department or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477. Information can be submitted anonymously, and tips may be eligible for a reward.
