The countdown to April 15, the deadline to file your federal income taxes, is underway.

If you need help with your return, there is a free option available in Miramar.

The city is hosting the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at the Alexandra P. Davis Multi-Service Complex, which offers free tax return preparation for those who qualify.

You can search for VITA programs on the IRS website. The city’s flyer specifies that the program runs on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through April 11. It will be closed on April 4, the day before Easter.

Appointments are encouraged. Services are offered to people generally making $67,000 or less, those with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers.

Here is what to bring to the appointment:

  • A copy of last year’s tax return
  • All forms W-2 and 1099
  • Forms 1095-A (ACA Statements)
  • Information for other income
  • Information for all deductions (including charitable contributions)
  • Total paid to a daycare or childcare provider and their tax ID number
  • For direct deposit of the refund: Proof of account and the bank’s routing number

There is also a dropoff option. Call 954-889-2700 to make an appointment or to ask about the dropoff location.
