Miramar’s police chief was among the honorees Saturday, Feb. 21, at a Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County ceremony.

At the 22nd Annual Déjà Vu: Drift Away to Summer event with BBBS at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, the mentorship organization inducted Chief Delrish Moss into its hall of fame.

Moss was once a BBBS mentor.

“A former Big Brother himself, Chief Moss brought the power of mentorship into his role as Chief of Police in the City of Miramar by launching the Bigs with Badges program — creating meaningful, trust-based relationships that continue to shape brighter futures for local youth,” BBBS wrote in an Instagram post.

To help develop respect for the badge, the Bigs with Badges program connects youth one-on-one with police officers, sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, other first-responders and active and retired military.

“It’s a great way to plant seeds that grow good harvest in terms of kids being able to see their future in mentors,” Moss said in a Miramar Police Department Instagram post.

Moss is a veteran police officer who was with the Miami police department for more than 30 years.

He served as police chief in Ferguson, Missouri, for two years after the killing of Michael Brown in 2014, and as captain of Florida International University’s police department.
