Runners will lace up before sunrise Saturday, March 7, with more than bragging rights on the line — the winner of Miramar’s signature 5K will take home $1,000 in prize money.

The 8th Annual Mayor Messam Health & Fitness 5K Run offers competitive athletes a cash incentive and a morning of wellness-focused activities.

While runners chase the cash prize, families can take part in yoga sessions (11 a.m), visit the on-site health fair and free medical screening and enjoy activities designed to promote active living.

For male and female runners, the prize money is $1,000 for first place. Second place is $500 and third place takes $150.

The event, hosted by Mayor Wayne M. Messam, begins at 6:30 a.m. with a warmup for runners. The timed run begins at 7 a.m. and health fair activities run through 11 a.m. The starting gate is at Miramar Town Center, 2300 Civic Center Place.

Registration is $35 for all runners. Messam is offering runners a discount code that brings the registration price down to $20. The code is MMRC.

Although the event is being sponsored by the City of Miramar, Messam said runners from surrounding cities are invited to take part.

There is no cost for those who wish to walk the course, which will stretch from the front of City Hall, along Miramar Boulverad to Palm Avenue, then back to City Hall.

City officials say the goal is to encourage Miramar residents of all fitness levels to participate — whether they are sprinting for the $1,000 prize or simply walking the course with friends and family.

Runners can register through the City of Miramar’s website by clicking the “Register Here” link on the event page.

For more information, residents can contact the mayor’s office at 954-602-3198 or email elaroche@miramarfl.gov.
