Woman pleads guilty in wrong-way crash that killed aspiring firefighter in Miramar
A Hialeah woman has pleaded guilty to all charges related to a fatal wrong-way crash in Miramar on Florida’s Turnpike, according to court documents.
Sunshine Perez pleaded guilty Thursday, March 12, to DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide in the January 2025 death of Ezequiel “Zeke” Urrutia, 23, after driving several miles in the wrong direction and crashing into his car.
Perez, 45 at the time of her arrest in April 2025, faced seven charges, including two counts of DUI manslaughter and one count of vehicular homicide.
The warrant for her arrest shows that her blood alcohol level was over the legal limit, and that she tested positive for opioids and stimulants.
Urrutia’s parents told WPLG Local 10 News that they started a scholarship in their son’s name, as he was an aspiring firefighter in training.
“She was at the courthouse pleading guilty to every charge, and in doing so I did see she was pretty shaken and understandably so,” Frank Urrutia told the outlet. “We’re still devastated by the loss of our son. It’s something we’ve had to endure and figure out how to live our lives.”
According to court documents, her sentencing is scheduled for Friday, July 24. She faces up to 34 years in prison.
