Miramar city commissioners could soon approve funding for a new community youth center.

Planned in 2024 in the city’s capital improvement project budget, the New Community Youth Center now has a potential contracting company and a pre-construction budget of $74,568.

The city manager will present the plan to the commission on Wednesday, March 18, including a proposal from H.A. Contracting for pre-construction and construction manager at risk services.

This would be the Miami-based firm’s first time working with the City of Miramar.

According to city documents, the plan is to construct a 12,000-square-foot state-of-the-art recreation and multi-purpose facility, including a basketball court with bleacher seating, covered fitness court, shaded playground with rubber surfacing, covered drop off area and entrance, conference and multi-purpose rooms and kitchen.

The construction budget is $7-8 million. H.A. Contracting said that for a recreation facility, special attention is given to ADA accessibility compliance, energy efficiency and hurricane resilience.

The guaranteed maximum price for the project must be decided no later than June 15, the resolution reads.

Miramar has two main recreational centers: Sunset Lakes Community Center and Vernon E. Hargray Youth Enrichment Center.

Both buildings had their gym floors renovated this year and reopened on Feb. 23.
