Spring is a great time to start planting in your yard, especially if you have fruit trees.

If you’re feeling the spring spirit, Broward County Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis is hosting a free tree giveaway at Miramar Pineland Park on Saturday, April 18, starting at 8 a.m.

They will have five varieties: banana, mango, soursop, papaya and Jamaican caper.

Jamaican caper is an ornamental accent plant with flowers and seed pods that can withstand drought and hurricane winds.

Soursop or guanabana is a sweet fruit with a green skin. At maturity, the tree can grow from 15 to 30 feet tall.

Trees are available until noon or while supplies last. Only one tree will be given per Broward County household, and vehicles should make space in their trunk before they arrive at the park.

“Let’s grow a greener Broward together,” said Commissioner Davis in an Instagram video.

The county has shared some advice from the University of Florida IFAS Extension Hillsborough County on how to plant trees for the first time:

  • Avoid obstacles such as overhead wires and sidewalks
  • Handle the tree by the pot, not the stem
  • Keep it shaded and watered until ready to plant
  • Plant ASAP
  • Make sure you have enough sunlight and the right soil
  • Dig a hole wider than the pot

Further instructions can be found in their video. Reserve your spot on Eventbrite.
