Seven FIFA World Cup games are scheduled to take place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, just a few miles from Miramar residents.

At last week’s city commission meeting, Miramar Police Chief Delrish Moss said he received information that Miami Gardens was planning to create a checkpoint at Miramar Parkway and University Drive as a checkpoint for residents going back into Miami Gardens.

This would reroute some of the traffic through Miramar, Moss said.

“We strenuously objected to, one, not telling us, and two, to making a plan for our city without including us in our city that would affect our residents,” Moss told commissioners during the Wednesday, April 1, meeting.

“Currently, they are rethinking that plan,” he continued.

The Miami Gardens Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the Miramar News on April 6.

Hard Rock Stadium will host matches starting June 15 and ending July 18. The influx of tourists is expected to bring a huge economic boost to Miami Gardens and surrounding cities, with Fox Business reporting an estimated 600,000 to 1 million visitors to the area.

According to Miami-Dade County, the area is expecting $1.5 billion in economic impact.

Moss said the department will continue to attend Miami Gardens meetings and asked that Miramar police be included in the decision.

“They’re looking at some other ways to do that that won’t impact us, but we think that we’re going to still be impacted by traffic anyway,” he said.
