Walker Chiropractic Wellness Center is hosting an event for Black moms-to-be to help them prepare to advocate for themselves before, during and after birth.

Center owner and chiropractic physician Venessa Walker shared a fact from the CDC: Black women are three times more likely to die from a medical issue related to pregnancy than white women.

That’s why she’s hosting the Mommies & Mocktails: Black Maternal Health Week event on Saturday, April 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Walker Chiropractic has previously hosted other events aimed at personal health advocacy and education.

This event is free to join with registration on Eventbrite.

“Our goal for having the event for six years now is that moms can walk away advocating for themselves,” Walker told the Miramar News. “We want the event to be light while having heavy conversations.”

Walker described a bright atmosphere and safe space where moms can share the highs and lows of labor.

Speakers include Florida State Senator Rosalind Osgood; Dr. Terri Ann Bennett chief of maternal fetal medicine at Memorial Healthcare System; and Renée Rivers, a mental health therapist.

Some takeaways Walker hopes the mothers leave with are ways to advocate themselves to doctors, set expectations and create a birth plan they are comfortable with.

Panelists will also share holistic care recommendations, including seeing the chiropractor during pregnancy. Walker said many people don’t know that they can get a chiropractic adjustment for pelvic and lower back issues.

“This event is about more than conversation — it’s about education, empowerment and action,” according to the event description.
