A French-inspired dessert sold at the Costco in Pembroke Pines is part of a multi-state recall due to a labeling error that could pose a health risk to some consumers.

The recall, announced on Tuesday, April 7, involves “item #2000012 Traditional Madeleines” that have been accidentally packaged with chocolate-hazelnut filling, which contains an undeclared tree nut allergen, according to a letter the warehouse club sent to recent buyers.

Costco officials warned that the dessert should not be consumed by individuals with hazelnut or filbert allergies, and those who purchased the product can return it for a full refund.

The Madeleines, in a plastic shell container, were sold from March 30 to April 6.

The Pembroke Pines Costco, located at 15915 Pines Blvd., is one of 11 stores facing the recall and the only one in Florida. Other affected locations were in California (two), Colorado, Illinois, Montana, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin (two) and Puerto Rico.

The product — “item #2000012 Traditional Madeleines” — was “inadvertently packaged” with chocolate hazelnut and mislabeled.

A representative for Costco Wholesale confirmed to the Pembroke Pines News that the city’s warehouse is included in the recall, but said no units of the affected product were sold at the location.

The representative said recall notifications are issued at the corporate level and that situations like this fall under corporate responsibility.

Those with tree nut allergies exposed to hazelnut or filbert may experience “a severe or potentially life-threatening allergic reaction,” according to the Food Allergy Research & Education organization.
