The sudden resignation of Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick on Tuesday, April 21, has opened up one of South Florida’s safest Democratic seats, triggering what’s expected to be a crowded and closely watched contest in Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Several candidates had already entered the race before the vacancy — and are now pivoting to compete for an open District 20 seat.

Under federal and state law, vacancies in the U.S. House must be filled by election, with Gov. Ron DeSantis responsible for setting the dates for a special primary and general election.

It is unclear whether those contests will be aligned with Florida’s regularly scheduled Aug. 18 primary and Nov. 3 general election dates.

Here’s a look at who’s in the race as of April 21:

Democrats

Elijah Manley

  • Broward activist and progressive organizer
  • Ran for this seat previously and built a grassroots base
  • Has been actively campaigning and organizing across the district

Dale Holness

  • Former Broward County mayor and longtime local political figure
  • Ran in the 2022 special election for this seat, but lost to Cherfilus-McCormick
  • Known for strong ties to Caribbean and business communities

Luther Campbell

  • Known as “Uncle Luke,” leader of 2 Live Crew rap group
  • Local Miami-Dade celebrity with a history of civic activism
  • Former high school football coach; quit to enter the race

Rudy Moise

  • Physician, attorney and community leader
  • Has emphasized healthcare and economic issues

Note: Mark Douglas and Maisha Williams have filed paperwork to run as Democrats.

Republican

Rod Joseph

  • Army veteran
  • Has previously run in South Florida races
  • Faces an uphill climb in a heavily Democratic district
