Miramar is working to improve its parks, leading to closures starting Wednesday, April 22.

Monarch Lakes Park closed on March 5 due to a locust infestation. Pest control professionals treated the park at 2150 SW 136th Ave., where grassy and landscaped areas were overrun with pests.

The park reopened March 7.

In an announcement Wednesday, the city said the park was closed due to another infestation and will be shut down through Thursday.

Locusts are similar to grasshoppers and travel in destructive swarms. Invading locusts are difficult to control once the swarm is developed. They can be devastating for agriculture and forestry because they feed on many types of plants.

Meanwhile, at Linear Park on Utopia Drive, the city is beginning construction and the walking trail along the water will close in phases.

Linear Park South is closed through the first week of May. Linear Park North will close from May 4- 22.

Linear Park’s main features are its walking trail and views of water, and it also offers outdoor fitness stations, picnic benches and a picnic shelter for gatherings.
