In Miramar, there is a volunteer organization dedicated to Hispanic residents and their perspectives.

Created by Vice Mayor Carson “Eddy” Edwards’ office, Hispanic Community Advocates aims to strengthen the relationship between the Hispanic community and the City Commission.

“Through transparency, participation and shared dialogue, the Hispanic Community Advocates will empower residents to be active partners in shaping Miramar’s future,” Edwards wrote in an announcement in January.

HCA and Edwards are hosting two events in May to strengthen the community and help locals meet each other. Reserve your spot on Eventbrite to attend.

Saturday, May 2

Managing Your Finances 101 — 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This workshop captures the budgeting basics and more advanced topics as well, such as understanding credit, accounting principles, financial planning and banking essentials.

Edwards will welcome six guest speakers, including attorney Mariel Tollinchi of Tollinchi Law and Debbie Rivera, credit repair consultant. This day full of educational sessions will be hosted at the Miramar Branch Library, 2050 Civic Center Place.

“Hear from a lineup of experienced professionals ready to help you level up your finances and make smarter money moves,” the city wrote in an Instagram post.

Tuesday, May 12

Mix & Mingle — 6 to 8 p.m.

To bring together the Hispanic community, business owners and the community at large, Edwards will host an outing where the city says everyone is welcome.

Join Juana’s Latin Sports Bar at 11602 City Hall Promenade for some light bites in Latin flavors, with a cash bar. This gathering is geared toward networking and collaboration between residents and businesses.

Juana’s Latin Sports Bar is known for its Dominican and Puerto Rican cuisine and live music.
