A fatal early-morning traffic accident Sunday on Miramar Parkway claimed the life of a longtime municipal employee, city officials said Tuesday.

Killed in the crash was Leighton Henriques, 46, a veteran employee and a heavy equipment supervisor in Miramar’s utilities department. He was hired in 2010.

The crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 3, near the 8900 block of Miramar Parkway, Miramar police said.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by Miramar police’s traffic homicide unit, which has not released information about how many vehicles were involved or whether speed, road conditions or other elements played a role in the fatal crash.

Henriques was regarded as a key member of the utilities team, helping support the city’s infrastructure and services that residents rely on daily.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our city family,” City Manager Roy L. Virgin said in a statement. “Leighton served the City of Miramar with dedication and commitment for many years, and his contributions to our community will not be forgotten.”

A visitation for Henriques will be held May 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 2401 SW 64th Ave. A live stream is available at heavenlysendoff.com.
