Miramar High will lose its principal of nearly three years at the end of this school year.

Winfred Porter recently announced that he has accepted an opportunity that will take him thousands of miles from Florida.

“After much consideration, I have made the decision to take the next step in my professional journey and have accepted an opportunity to serve in a leadership role that will require me to relocate out of state,” Porter said in an April 24 letter to the Miramar High community.

“Together, we have built upon the proud success and legacy of Miramar High School, and I leave knowing that the foundation is strong, the culture is rooted, and the future is bright. While my role may change, my pride in this school and my belief in its people will not,” he continued.

Though Porter declined to share more than what was said in the letter with the Miramar News, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported that he is taking an executive director position in Fort Worth, Texas.Four other Broward principals also resigned to take positions in Fort Worth, the outlet reported.

Former Broward County Public Schools superintendent Peter Licata recently became superintendent of the Fort Worth Independent School District with authority to hire new regional executive directors, according to the Sun Sentinel.

Porter expressed his thanks in his letter and listed several accomplishments achieved during his time at Miramar High, such as earning the first “A” school grade in several years, a 95% graduation rate, receiving Magnet School of Distinction Awards and introducing Cambridge Accelerated Courses.

“There was never a dull moment serving this community,” he wrote. “I remember often telling you all, ‘I love you.’ Please know that this has not changed, and it never will.”

Porter’s replacement as Miramar High principal has not been announced as of May 12.
