The Miramar City Commission is recommending a huge upgrade for the Sunset Lakes Community Center.

The building, located at 2801 SW 186th Ave. is home to several community activities, such as free Zumba, and is a polling place for many residents.

At the Wednesday, May 20, commission meeting, the commision will vote on a recommendation to replace the roof of the community center at a cost of $1.2 million.

The center’s ballroom, multipurpose/senior room and gym are available for rent, with discounted fees for residents.

It also houses a fitness center with annual memberships for residents and non-residents, and a soccer field.

Commission approval is needed for expenditures, such as the community center’s roof replacement, that exceed $75,000.

For many projects, the city will ask companies to submit a bid, but for the roof replacement it is piggybacking off previous contract with Garland/DBS, Inc. This contract is often used by local governments to expedite the project timeline.

The commission executed the piggyback agreement in 2024 to complete the $880,000 roof replacement for the Vernon E. Hargray Youth Enrichment Center.

The budget for the Sunset Lakes Community Center roof replacement was approved at a September 2025 commission meeting.

The start date for the project has not been disclosed.
