Jamaica charity gala will support hurricane recovery efforts. Here are details
South Florida community leaders, philanthropists and members of the Jamaican diaspora are expected to gather Saturday, June 6, at the Jamaica Charity Gala at the Loews Coral Gables Hotel in Miami.
Hosted by the American Friends of Jamaica, the annual gala will focus on supporting ongoing hurricane recovery and development efforts across Jamaica, including rebuilding roofs and restoring schools damaged by Hurricane Melissa in October.
Tickets are $150 per person; the hotel is located at 2950 Coconut Grove Drive in Coral Gables.
Cocktail hour and a silent auction begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. An after-party featuring a live performance by Jamaican reggae artist Busy Signal starts at 9 p.m.
Organizers say the gala will bring together business leaders, charitable organizations and supporters of humanitarian causes to raise funds for recovery projects and long-term development efforts on the island.
The gala also will honor several internationally recognized humanitarian and business leaders for their impact and service:
- Michael Capponi, founder of Global Empowerment Mission, will receive the International Humanitarian Award for his organization’s disaster relief and recovery work worldwide.
- Edward Raine, president and chief executive officer of Food For The Poor in Coconut Creek, will receive the International Humanitarian Award for efforts fighting poverty and hunger throughout the Caribbean and Latin America.
- Norman W. Horne of ARC Manufacturing Limited will receive the International Achievement Award.
Tickets, sponsorship opportunities and additional information are available through the American Friends of Jamaica website.
