Miramar man was driving 83 mph in 35 mph zone before deadly crash, cops say
A Miramar man was arrested in connection with a March 25 crash that left one person dead and another seriously injured.
Dominick Rella, 20, was driving with a suspended license and had been drinking before the early-morning crash in Fort Lauderdale involving three vehicles, including a firetruck, records show.
Fort Lauderdale police say Rella was behind the wheel of an Audi and driving on West Broward Boulevard when he ran a red light and collided with a BMW at about 4:10 a.m.
Following the initial impact, the BMW then struck the front of the firetruck, whose occupants were uninjured, according to the arrest affidavit.
Rella was traveling at about 83 mph in a 35 mph zone, police say.
Rella and two victims — Rella’s passenger and the driver of the BMW — were taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where the BMW driver died while being treated.
At Rella’s bond court appearance on Friday, May 22, the mother of the deceased victim requested that the accused be held without bond, WSVN reported.
“I would like for today’s hearing, he gets no bail because I don’t want another mother to go through what I’m going through right now,” she said.
Rella’s bond was set at $84,000, and he has since posted bail, according to the news outlet.
Rella’s charges include vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter, and police say his blood alcohol content level was more than twice the legal limit.
Rella has pleaded not guilty to all charges, court records show.
In February, Rella was accused of another speeding incident, in which law enforcement flagged him driving 80 mph in a 45 mph zone, records show.
