Children can learn essential life skills while enjoying a fun day.

Run by the Kiwanis Club of East Pines Miramar in partnership with Miramar Commissioner Avril Cherasard, Play it Safe Palooza is a day at the park that teaches kids how to stay safe.

The event will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, at Lakeshore Park.

Kiwanis International is a service club dedicated to helping children across the world, starting with local groups.

“They are our future, so that’s our goal,” Nicole Francis, Kiwanis East Pines Miramar secretary, told the Miramar News.

The goal of this free event is “ensuring the kids have a rounded knowledge of different aspects of life,” she said.

The event is in its third year and usually features police officers, firefighters and nurses, who will teach children essential skills such as gun safety, how to bandage a cut and safety in water.

“It’s educational but we wanted to have it as a fun event so the kids can be more open,” Francis said.

The fun aspects include bounce houses, police therapy dogs, prizes and a firetruck tour.

To promote bicycle safety, Kiwanis is exchanging helmets at the event. Bring in an old helmet or pick up a new one.
