Miramar’s Juneteenth Family Day features culture, book signing. Here are details
Since Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, the City of Miramar has found ways to celebrate.
This year, the celebration will take place outdoors at City Hall Plaza from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, June 19.
Juneteenth, often called the nation’s second Independence Day, celebrates the end of slavery in the United States.
Since 2022, Miramar Commissioner Yvette Colbourne has hosted Juneteenth celebrations. The city gathered for the first time under the theme “unite against racism.”
The cornerstone of this year’s event is Pulitzer Prize-winner Eugene Robinson, a former Washington Post columnist, and his book “Freedom Lost, Freedom Won.”
Robinson is scheduled to take part in a conversation and book signing from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
“As we celebrate history and freedom, enjoy dollmaking, an African art exhibit and a step show,” Colbourne said in an Instagram video.
There will be activities for all ages that highlight Black culture and history, including workshops for hair braiding, drumming and double dutch.
Kids can also enjoy jewelry making and the little library with free books while supplies last.
As for performances, expect dancers, speakers, poetry and more.
