With much fanfare, Broward County is set to unveil official 2026 FIFA World Cup free watch party sites during a news conference on Friday, June 5.

A comment during Wednesday night’s Miramar commission meeting hinted that the city could be among the hosts.

With tickets costing thousands of dollars, the chance to watch games with crowds of soccer lovers — for free — is just what many South Florida residents are looking for.

The host cities will be revealed at a 10 a.m. news conference on Friday at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise.

For Miramar, where many Jamaican and Carbbean residents love soccer, hosting an official watch party could provide a chance to attract visitors, showcase city amenities and give residents a local venue to experience one of the world’s largest sporting events.

While county officials are keeping the host cities under wraps until the news conference, it seems possible Miramar could be one of them.

During a discussion unrelated to the World Cup announcement, a city staff member told commissioners that the city was working to host a viewing of some World Cup games at the Miramar Cultural Center.

The comment was brief and no details were provided. However, it came less than 36 hours before Broward County’s scheduled announcement of official watch-party locations.

Coincidence?

If Miramar, is selected, the city would join a countywide effort to capitalize on the global spotlight coming to South Florida during the World Cup.

Seven matches — including four in the group stage as well as the third-place match — are scheduled for Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

Friday’s announcement will unveil official watch party locations and schedules, fan engagement activities, and community programming and partnerships supporting World Cup celebrations throughout the county.

The county also plans to discuss transportation options and tourism initiatives connected to the monthlong tournament, which is expected to draw thousands of visitors from around the world.

The World Cup begins June 11, with matches being played across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
