Wildfire smoke from Everglades-area fires reaches Miramar. Can you smell it?
A wildfire burning near the Everglades is sending smoke and ash into the air, affecting parts of Miramar and southwest Broward County.
Cars and buildings have been spotted with ash, and there are reports of some Miami-Dade workers evacuated from their building.
The Quarry 2 Fire started Monday, June 15, near Doral. It had grown from 600 acres to 6,500 acres as of Wednesday morning, the Florida Forest Service map shows.
The second wildfire started on Tuesday near Medley, according to DisasterAWARE, and it spans about 500 acres.
The cause for both fires is recorded as natural.
“Fire behavior has been reported as moderate, burning primarily in dormant brush and hardwood slash,” officials wrote of the second fire.
Air quality remains moderate despite a warning from Broward County Environment officials on Tuesday that lasted until noon due to particulate matter in the air.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue continues to work on both fires, saying on X, “As temperatures rise throughout the day, smoke is expected to lift, but those in nearby communities may still see or smell smoke.”
“If smoke is present in your area, limit time outdoors, keep doors and windows closed, and set air conditioning systems to recirculate indoor air. These precautions are especially important for individuals with respiratory conditions,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said.
The Florida Forest Service map shows that both fires are at least 25% contained as of Wednesday.
The smoke can be seen from Miramar. DisasterAWARE estimates the fire will affect 1,780 households.
