What happens when ‘Wizard of Oz’ goes modern? Free show comes to southwest Broward
We all know the story.
Dorothy, a curious farm girl from Kansas, is swept away by a powerful tornado and lands in a magical and distant land by the name of Oz.
Then, the adventure truly begins.
Now, a Miami-based traveling theater company is set to bring a modern reimagining of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” to the Susan B. Katz Theatre in Pembroke Pines with a free performance at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23.
Admission is free, and seating will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Susan B. Katz Theater, a 442-seat venue and home to the Pembroke Pines Theatre of the Performing Arts, is located inside the River of Grass ArtsPark campus.
According to the Fantasy Theatre Factory, the production offers a fast-paced and comedic twist on L. Frank Baum’s classic, featuring “South Florida flavor, playful surprises, and big-hearted adventure.”
The show follows Dorothy and her cat, Todo, as they make their way through the Land of Oz alongside a slew of familiar characters, including the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion.
The theater’s version adds modern touches, including a Wi-Fi powered Tin Man and a Wicked Witch with an influencer side gig.
Fantasy Theatre Factory is a nonprofit organization founded in 1978, operates at the Sandrell Rivers Theater in Miami and has toured throughout Florida and internationally.
The production is part of the theater’s educational programming, inviting students and families to engage with the show’s meaning on a deeper level.
The Pembroke Pines performance is part of FTF’s touring run of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” which is scheduled to continue through late July.
