Miramar man charged in crash that killed scooter rider last year, police say
A 19-year-old Miramar man has been charged in connection with last year’s fatal chain-reaction, high-speed crash in Hollywood that killed a scooter rider and injured two others, investigators said.
Hollywood police say Austin Quenten Mitchell-Alfred was driving a 2025 Cadillac Lyriq at speeds reaching 75 mph in a 45-mph zone when the accident occurred at a red light at State Road 7 and Washington Street on Nov. 25.
Police said Mitchell-Alfred changed lanes and entered the intersection against the red light, colliding with a Mercury Grand Marquis. The driver of the Grand Marquis was seriously injured in the violent impact, which caused the Cadillac to swerve and strike the scooter rider who was crossing the roadway. The rider died from his injuries.
Police said data recovered from the Cadillac showed Mitchell-Alfred was traveling about 75 mph before he applied his brakes.
The Mercury driver continues to recover from his injuries. A passenger in the Cadillac also sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Mitchell-Alfred faces multiple charges, including vehicular homicide; reckless driving causing serious bodily injury, physical injuries and property damage; two counts of unlawful speeding; and one count of running a red light.
