Miramar collecting donations for Venezuela earthquake relief. How you can help
As Venezuelans were ravaged by dual earthquakes on Wednesday, cities around the U.S. began mobilizing to provide aid.
The death toll has risen past 900 as of June 26, and over 3,000 are reported injured. Rescue teams continue to search for missing victims.
Now, Miramar is joining Global Empowerment Mission, an internationally recognized disaster relief organization that is already working to collect donations in Miami, to expand the collection.
The city is calling on residents and businesses to support the Venezuelan community by donating essential supplies.
“Miramar has always been a community that leads with compassion. Many of our neighbors have family and loved ones in Venezuela who are experiencing unimaginable loss and uncertainty,” Mayor Wayne M. Messam said in a news release.
“In moments like these, we are reminded that humanity knows no borders. Every case of water, every package of food, every hygiene kit represents hope for a family trying to rebuild their lives.”
Commissioners shared words in English and Spanish to comfort and encourage Venezuelans in Miramar.
“Many members of our community have deep personal and family ties to Venezuela, making this tragedy especially heartbreaking. This humanitarian relief drive is an opportunity for each of us to stand beside our neighbors in a meaningful way,” Commissioner Yvette Colbourne said.
Examples of items needed are non-perishable food, water, first-aid kits, batteries, blankets, hygiene products, baby supplies, KN95 masks and clean-up supplies.
The city will accept donations 24/7 at these locations:
- Miramar Police Headquarters, 11765 City Hall Promenade
- Fire Station 19, 6700 Miramar Parkway
- Fire Station 70, 9001 Miramar Parkway
