Belize City may seem far away, but its connection to Miramar is strong.

Belizeans in Miramar can now connect with its sister city through Miramar Belize Day, an initiative that brings the Belizean government here to provide services that would normally require international travel.

From July 9-11, Miramar will welcome Belize’s Immigration and Vital Statistics Department to City Hall.

Belizeans can access a mobile passport and vital statistics hub to access passport renewal, nationality applications, birth and marriage certificates, adoption records and citizenship-related documentation.

“Through our Sister City relationship with Belize City, we are fostering new pathways for trade, tourism, investment, and entrepreneurship while ensuring that Belizean families in South Florida have access to essential government services,” Miramar Director of Economic Development Anita Taylor said in a news release.

“This initiative demonstrates how local collaboration can have a global impact.”

The initiative will culminate with a Miramar Belize Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at City Hall, highlighting Belizean culture, tourism, business, education and community partnerships.

Expect Belizean food, STEM demonstrations, youth activities and networking opportunities meant to strengthen the connection between Belize City residents and Miramar.

“From Garifuna drumming and dance to a chocolate & wine experience and more — there’s something for everyone,” the city wrote in an Instagram post.

Two dance troops are scheduled to perform, more consul office services will be offered on site and a robotics competition will be held.

Registration is open for the Lego STEM Architectural Build Challenge taking place at noon during the Miramar Belize Day celebration.

Students from fourth to 12th grade are encouraged to compete for a prize for the best build, and the deadline to register is Wednesday, July 8.
