The inaugural Bahamas Goombay Broward has sold out its online registrations, but organizers say walk-ins are still welcome.

The free event, which celebrates Bahamian culture and will include a Junkanoo band, food, a culture village and a craft market, will take place from 2 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, at Miramar’s City Hall Plaza.

“We reached the capacity number, but you can walk in,” Miramar Commissioner Avril Cherasard, who is hosting the event, told the Miramar News. “If it gets too much, the fire department will let us know.”

The event will be a cultural experience by day and a party by night with Junkanoo rushes and performances from Julien Believe, Stileet, Avvy, Sweet Emily and Jonny Cake.

Cherasard said there will be at least 15 opportunities for food, plus dessert from Cleveland’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream.

“Almost every food truck in South Florida that’s Bahamian related … we worked to get in the lineup,” she said.

One big highlight will be a proclamation honoring Baha Men founding member Isaiah Taylor.

“Who Let the Dogs Out,” the most popular hit from the Baha Men, won a Grammy in 2001 for Best Dance Recording.

Taylor is the band’s bassist and leader.

“I want to make sure that I express to everyone how important it is to know the Bahamas outside of conch fritters and conch salad,” Cherasard said, though there will certainly be conch at the event.

In addition to the free online registration spots filling up, all $100 VIP packages also sold out, organizers said.
