Haitian artists to take center stage at Miramar’s International Dance Festival
The International Dance Festival is coming to Miramar and will feature dance from around the world with Konpa, the Haitian dance music genre, taking center stage.
Two local organizations — the Hallandale Section Cid-Unesco and Rhonda Eyes Alliance (REA) — are joining forces to raise money and showcase Konpa and different styles of dance on Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Miramar Cultural Center.
The festival runs from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and will feature dances from different countries and a performance by the Haitian band Lucky Plus.
Lucky Plus was featured at the Miramar Cultural Center in March at the 10th annual Congress on Dance Research.
Countries featured Nov. 15 will include India and Mexico.
Proceeds that go toward Hallandale Section Cid-Unesco also benefit their Social & Cultural Dance Educational Scholarships and the REA Vision Care Projects in South Florida and Haiti, according to their website.
They provide dance education and support dance entrepreneurs in economically challenged areas.
For 13 years, REA has established a vision center in L’Eglise de Dieu Reformee Hospital in Arcahaie, Haiti, and continues to assist local Haitian ophthalmologists in setting up clinics, training locals to becoming optical technicians and assisting other rural communities in the Caribbean and South Florida, its Facebook page says.
Tickets start at $50 before fees.
