The December holiday season is here with Thanksgiving Day gone, and the City of Miramar is preparing to celebrate. Events happening around the city include tree lightings to ring in the festivities and free recurring gatherings that happen each week.

Here are some of the events happening in Miramar from Dec. 1 to 4:

Monday

Passport Walk-In Days — 9 a.m. to noon

The Office of the City Clerk is open to help you renew or apply for a U.S. passport, and for two days, you can go without making an appointment on Dec. 1 and 2 and just walk in. This is also an opportunity to meet representatives from the office of the Broward Supervisor of Elections. They can help with voter registration, voter information and other election related services.

Tuesday

Zumba on the Plaza — 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Miramar residents can enjoy Zumba every Tuesday in City Hall Plaza. This weekly event is led by dance teacher Gabriela Jurado. Dancers of all levels are encouraged to attend and bring water. This dance class is always free.

Holiday Tree Lighting — 6 to 8 p.m.

One of this year’s tree lightings is taking place in front of City Hall. The tree is already up and will be lit after live performances and a special visit from a friend from the North Pole, the flyer reads. The event is free and takes place almost every year to kick off the holiday season.

Wednesday

Wednesday Night Chess — 7 to 10 p.m.

The Miramar Chess Club welcomes anyone who is into the strategic game. They meet every Wednesday at the Starbucks on Red Road, and players are encouraged to bring their own chess set to the meetup. Whether you’re very experienced or just want to try it out, the Miramar Chess Club welcomes all.

Thursday

Zumba at the Sunset Lakes Community Center — 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Instructor Gabriela Jurado returns for another weekly Zumba class. This class is indoors at the Sunset Lakes Community Center. Dance and get fit at the same time with moves that are made for participants of all levels. Join for free every Thursday.

Miramar’s Very Merry Celebration — 6 to 9 p.m.

Miramar is having a second tree lighting on Thursday at Shirley Branca Park. This gathering also features live entertainment and adds in food for purchase and a winter “snow” hill for children to slide down, according to the event flyer. Welcome the holiday season for free and bring blankets and chairs to watch the tree lighting.
