Dancehall DJs to battle for $1,000 at Miramar’s Selecta Showdown. What to expect
Two free events round out the last week of Black History Month in Miramar: Selecta Showdown and Afro-Carib Festival.
To highlight dancehall week, Selecta Showdown on Friday, Feb. 27, at Shirley Branca Park will showcase three women DJs who will compete in front of the crowd for $1,000. The show is scheduled to run from 7 to 11 p.m.
Entry is free, and food and drinks will be available for purchase.
The event is hosted by Miramar Commissioner Carson “Eddy” Edwards, who is also hosting the Afro-Carib Festival on Feb. 28.
To add to the festivities, the city will honor dancehall icon Wayne Wonder with the Dancehall Legend Award.
“We think it’s time that we honor him and, as they say, give him his flowers,” Edwards told the Miramar News, noting the artist’s classic covers and features with other beloved artists such as Buju Banton.
His 2003 song “No Letting Go” remains his greatest hit.
This will be the second Dancehall Legend Award recipient after Spragga Benz in 2024.
“It is going to be a fun night,” Edwards said. “They’re going to be throwing in some R&B, some soca.”
Expect a party atmosphere with dancing and singing all night long.
Competing for the $1,000 grand prize are DJ Lady Terra, DJ Rere and DJ Shawty Redz.
“I’ve always run from clashes,” DJ Lady Terra said in an Instagram post.
The only competition she remembers competing in is Selecta Showdown 2025.
“But this year, I’m coming for the thousand dollars. … It’s not really about the money, though, it’s about winning. I’m a little competitive,” she continued.
“They’re all serious about walking away with the title,” Edwards said.
