Nominations open for best Haitian patty competition at flag day event in Miramar
If you think you know the best spot for Haitian patties, Miramar wants to know about it.
Haitian Flag Day is coming up on Monday, May 18. Often celebrated all weekend in South Florida, the holiday commemorates the successful revolution against the French colonial army in Haiti and the beginning of the nation.
On Saturday, May 16, Miramar will honor the holiday with the Haitian Flag Day Family Fest celebration at Shirley Branca Park from 4 to 8 p.m., hosted by Commissioner Avril Cherasard.
Before the party can get started, the city is seeking restaurants for its Haitian patty competition, to be judged by three experts at the celebration.
There will be a live, on-stage blind taste test for the Battle of the Patties. In an Instagram post, Cherasard asked locals to tag restaurants in the comments that should be invited to compete.
Invited restaurants must choose one patty flavor and produce 30 to 50 patties cut for tasting.
Here are some of the Miramar restaurants that were tagged in the comments for nomination:
La Paix Bakery — 6035 Miramar Parkway
La Paix has served Miramar for over 20 years, specializing in baked goods such as patties and bread. Patty flavors include beef, herring, fried chicken and cod. It also sells hard dough bread, buns and cookies.
Puce Bakery — 7150 Pembroke Road
This bakery already claims to be “home of the best patés in town.” Its featured products are its cakes, but the patty flavors are popular as well. On Instagram, the restaurant shows off patties with fish and beef, and a sweet guava-filled version.
La Bakerie — 7102 Pembroke Road
This Haitian bakery offers chicken, beef, cod and herring patties, in addition to spinach and guava. They can be purchased in bulk. La Bakerie also offers cake, cookies, bread and sandwiches. Find them in Miramar or at the Lauderhill location.
