Want to start a business? Miramar Business Academy has training. Here are details
Miramar Business Academy (MBA) is accepting applications for its entrepreneurship training program from prospective and existing small businesses. What’s more: Joining gives you a chance at up to $10,000 in grants from the city.
Miramar’s Economic Development and Housing department is encouraging entrepreneurs to sign up for its waitlist for the 12-session program, which runs from Feb. 12 to May 8.
The program consists of two parts:
- The first part will train aspiring entrepreneurs on starting and running a successful business, helping them prepare a business plan and estimate financial projections.
- The second part is a chance at a grant fund of up to $10,000 that will help businesses that have completed MBA training purchase equipment, professional services, technology, infrastructure and upgrades.
Session topics include market research, website planning, revenue generation, bookkeeping and accounting, and strategic hiring.
“We basically cover every aspect of entrepreneurship … so when someone completes that program, you are ready to start or grow a business,” said Claude Louissaint, economic development manager, in a promotional video.
After completing the courses and submitting a business plan, entrepreneurs will be judged by economic development staff. Then, the shortlist of approved businesses will advance to a pitch competition.
“For the approved grant recipients, the city will disburse the funds to the vendor(s) supplying the good(s) and/or service(s) to the businesses,” the city’s site reads.
“It was an outstanding feeling to win the grant. The money that came from that was very necessary for our business to thrive,” said Freddie Robinson, president of Change Donuts.
The MBA program began in 2023 as a partnership with SCORE Broward, which offers free training and tools to small businesses. Apply for SCORE’s MBA sessions on Zoom.
“The academy provided tools and insight that helped me think strategically about scaling my business,” Kay’s Paradise Hair owner Kay Martinek said.
