Miramar Parks and Recreation is partnering with Farm Share to give away free groceries on a first-come, first-served basis.

Starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, Miramar Commissioner Carson “Eddy” Edwards is hosting the food drive at Lakeshore Park.

Farm Share is a Florida food bank that collects donations from farms, grocery stores, restaurants and similar businesses to distribute to people in need.

Farm Share Director of Development Mario Lopez told the Miramar News that his organization is the sole contractor of the Emergency Food Assistance Program, which distributes U.S. Department of Agriculture food to communities through organizations such as Farm Share.

“Nowadays the need is enormous,” Lopez said. “The demographic we are seeing is not the poor, it’s the people who are employed and trying to make ends meet.”

Edwards echoed Lopez’s sentiment: “The average American right now is having a hard time. The price of groceries is very high, and any relief that they can get, they’ll take it,” he told the Miramar News.

Because the food being distributed is donation-based, Farm Share cannot guarantee that specific items will be available. However, these items are usually available:

  • Shelf-stable canned goods
  • Dry pasta or rice
  • Proteins: beef, chicken or pork
  • Vegetables

Saturday’s food drive will end at noon or when supplies run out.

Farm Share’s online calendar shows that every Saturday in October, it will be at multiple locations.

Lopez expressed a desire to hold more drives and encouraged locals to donate funds to help with distribution.

“I want to move the food that I have,” he said.

Other commissioners plan to hold drives, and during Thanksgiving the city will give away turkeys as well, Edwards said.
