The City of Miramar recently notified residents that street lights were out on Pembroke Road between Flamingo Road and Hiatus Road, and officials have now confirmed that more streets are dark due to the theft of copper wires.

On Oct. 23, the city sent out an alert detailing the thefts: “There has been an uptick in the theft of copper wiring causing street lights in various parts of the city to be out. Over $150,000 has been spent to reinstall the wiring and our Public Works team is working diligently with our electrical contractor to restore lighting.”

According to an Oct. 29 statement from the city , the copper wiring has resale value.

Officials also said thefts have spread to these areas:

  • Miramar Parkway between Flamingo Road and SW 145th Avenue
  • Red Road between Miramar Parkway and the Florida Turnpike
  • State Road 7 between Pembroke Road and Miramar Parkway

The city said the Public Works department is working closely with law enforcement to identify those responsible and explore additional deterrent measures.

“To help deter future thefts, the City has begun replacing copper wiring with aluminum wiring, which has significantly lower resale value,” officials said in the statement.

The city urged residents to exercise caution in these areas, especially at night.
