Have documents to shred or tech to recycle? Miramar’s shred-a-thon is coming up
The City of Miramar is taking an environmentally friendly approach to the new year.
Vice Mayor Yvette Colbourne is hosting a shred-a-thon on Saturday, Jan. 17, offering four ways to dispose of what might be taking up space in your home.
At Forzano Park from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Miramar residents can bring their important documents to shred, non-LED lightbulbs to exchange, hazardous home waste and old tech to recycle for free.
In a video on the City of Miramar’s Instagram, Colbourne encouraged residents to bring their ID — the event is for Miramar residents only — and stay in their car while things are unloaded.
“Let’s keep Miramar clean, safe and green,” Colbourne said in the post.
“New this year, we are excited to include a free lightbulb exchange, where Miramar residents can swap up to five old, non-LED lightbulbs for five new, energy-efficient LED bulbs, helping you save energy, save money and reduce heat in your home.”
If you’re trying to avoid identity theft, bring documents with important information to be shredded.
As for waste, examples of household hazardous waste are paint products, pool chemicals, household cleaners and pesticides, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
It encourages residents to visit your local household hazardous waste program website for advice and collection schedules or seek out drop-off sites such as this one.
The shred-a-thon is scheduled to take place again on Saturday, May 16, and Saturday, Sept. 19.
