Second-grader found with loaded magazine at Miramar Catholic school, police say
A second-grade student was found with a loaded ammunition magazine at a Catholic school in Miramar, police said.
The incident occurred Monday, Jan. 12, at St. Bartholomew Catholic School, 8003 Miramar Parkway, Miramar Police spokeswoman Janice McIntosh confirmed to the Miramar News.
It’s unclear how the loaded magazine — a device that holds live ammunition, or bullets, and is designed to be inserted into a firearm — ended up with the student. Typically, second-graders are between 7 and 8 years old.
Officers were called to the school after administrators reported that a student had a bag containing the magazine, police said. Authorities confirmed that the school followed established safety protocols after the item was discovered.
Police emphasized there was no active threat to students or staff. A gun is required to fire bullets from a loaded magazine, and a typical handgun magazine commonly holds up to 17 rounds.
No charges are being filed at this time, and the incident remains under administrative investigation, police said.
