A second suspect has been arrested in a violent home invasion that left a Miramar man pistol-whipped and briefly without his French bulldog, police said.

On Friday, Jan. 23, Miramar police said Sean Michael Hickey, 27, was taken into custody on charges of home invasion with a firearm and violation of felony probation. He was being held without bond at the Broward County Main Jail.

Hickey’s arrest follows the earlier arrest of accused accomplice Juliana Serna, 21, who was taken into custody on charges of home invasion with a deadly weapon and possession of cocaine.

Serna remains at the Paul Rein Detention Facility as of Jan. 23. Hickey was at large until this week. It’s unclear if police are looking for more suspects.

The arrests stem from a Jan. 5 incident at an apartment complex off Miramar Parkway on the 3100 block of Southwest 128th Terrace involving an attempted home invasion and the theft of a French bulldog — a breed that is often targeted because of its popularity.

According to police, officers were dispatched to the complex shortly before dawn after a ShotSpotter alert detected gunfire in the area. When officers arrived, they found shell casings and a resident who had been pistol-whipped.

The victim told officers he was approached by several people who attempted to force their way into his apartment, assaulted him and stole his French bulldog before fleeing on foot in different directions. The French bulldog was later found in the complex.

Miramar Fire Rescue treated the victim at the scene.

Police confirmed the stolen dog was later recovered nearby, bringing some relief after the violent encounter.

Investigators believe three suspects were involved and said they gained access to the gated complex through a hole in the perimeter fence. Authorities continue to search for the third suspect as of Jan. 23.
